The Netflix original series GLOW, which is about women's wrestling in the 80's, totally stole my heart! Ruth — whose wrestling persona is Soviet heel "Zoya the Destroya" — is such a relatable character for me, not just in her passion and dedication to her craft, but also her insecurity and feeling of being unappreciated.
This was a speed project (it took under 20 hours total to create) but quickly became one of my favorite cosplays.
I made this costume from scratch using Yaya Han's four way metallic stretch fabric. I adapted Simplicity 8513 for the bodysuit, made the belts and buckle myself, and even found a real vintage Soviet hat pin. I was concerned about pulling off the slicked-up hair look with a wig, since my own hair is bright blue, so I decided to take apart a wig and sew it into the hat!
I debuted this costume at DragonCon 2018, alongside my friend Dragonrider Cosplay, who was also cosplaying as Zoya! We had a great time running around the convention, shouting at people in bad Russian accents. Click photos to see photographer credits.
