Anyone can cosplay, but you'll usually find the biggest number of cosplayers at popular annual comic conventions like San Diego Comic-Con, New York Comic Con, and Denver Comic Con. Cosplaying is fun, and given the sheer number of people who love their anime, comic books, and video games, we can expect to see new amazing cosplays every year.
It's hard to predict trends with accuracy, but based on experience, people tend to cosplay what's currently being aired on TV or popular among PC and console gamers. When Pokémon Go was launched in July 2016, cons around the U.S. were filled with Pokémon-inspired cosplay. I even created a cosplay based on the popular Nintendo game.
So based on hype and the popularity of anime, comic books, and video games that will be launched or get a new season next year, here are some cosplay characters that might be extremely popular in 2018.
Eren Jaeger and Mikasa Ackerman (Attack on Titan)
Attack on Titan Season 3 will be launching in July 2018, which means that cons around the U.S. will most likely be filled with Mikasas and Eren Jaegers. Attack on Titan has a massive following not only in Japan, but also in the U.S. The Artifice cites 5 reasons why the anime is well-loved by fans, one of which is its easy-to-understand plot.
Natsu and Erza Scarlett (Fairy Tail)
Fairy Tail is one of the most successful animes in the world, sharing the same mainstream status with Naruto and One Piece. With the main characters' childish antics, uplifting plots, and great artwork, it's not surprising that the anime has a strong global following since it first aired in 2006. Cons in the past had a lot of Natsus, Erzas, and other popular Fairy Tail characters, so we will probably see a lot of them again next year given the fact that the anime's newest season will be launched at the same time.
Monster Hunters (Monster Hunter)
Monster Hunter's first international release was in June 2005, but the franchise is still going strong today. Since its initial release, there have been numerous sequels for the game, spin offs, and exclusive content for Japanese players. In January 2018, Monster Hunter World will be released for different platforms, and with it hundreds of different Monster Hunter cosplays.
There will be a Hellboy remake released next year that will star Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil), David Harbour (Suicide Squad), and Ian McShane (John Wick). The director says that it will be a darker, horror-based film, which should be interesting even for non-fans.
Superheroes inspire a lot of cosplays, largely thanks to the cinematic universe that's expanded exponentially over the last 10 years. Hellboy in particular widened its market by targeting not only comic book fans, but also fans of online gaming by releasing mature-based video game content. Slingo has a roster of slot games based on popular superheroes and hero archetypes including an officially licensed Hellboy slot game. The game features the titular character's iconic designs, enemies, as well as themes that are unique to Hellboy's world. With Dark Horse's latest move, both on the silver screen and in the digital realm, fans anticipate that Hellboy will get cosplayed a lot next year. This is what DC did with Batman before, and now the superhero is a globally recognized brand.
Cowboys (Red Dead Redemption 2)
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the sequel to Rockstar's critically-acclaimed titular game. With Rockstar's history, RDR2 will most likely be as successful as the first game, and it currently has a lot of hype. There are no details yet about the game apart from its release date estimation, but with an official trailer released, people can expect to see new characters from the old west getting cosplayed once more on con floors.
